Aliens vs. Predator is an upcoming game developed by Rebellion which was also responsible for the original title released in 1999 on PC. Three separate campaigns for different factions (Aliens, Predators, and Colonial Marines) in a game will form the exciting storyline. Multiplayer modes, cool weaponry choices and a number of unique kill moves sound and look great as well.

Aliens vs. Predator is a wonderful franchise and from the intriguing gameplay footage we have seen, it would be fair to say, that the new Rebellion's project can become a superb addition to the Universe and a highly entertaining game title. We've had a chance to catch up with Tim Jones, the Project Lead on Aliens vs. Predator, to discuss the details of the creative process. Read on below to find out more!

- Greetings! Please, introduce yourself.

- Hi! My name is Tim Jones and I'm the Head of Art and Design for Rebellion and I'm also the Project Lead on Aliens vs. Predator (2010).

- Have you been to Russia before?

- November of 2009 was my first time in Russia. I spent only a couple of days there, but I really enjoyed it, and Moscow is an amazing city, which looks like being very busy and very big. I was really excited to see the famous places of your country like Red Square, and your food is fantastic!

- What recent news about Rebellion can you share with us?

- Well, we are really excited about bringing Aliens vs. Predator franchise back to games. The project is coming out in February, 2010 on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360, so there is little time left to wait for the release. We've already announced that we will be supporting dedicated servers for PC, and its Multiplayer mode as well. We will ensure that gamers get great experience participating in Multiplayer, and that all their needs are fully served.

- How many people are working in your studio?

- We have a number of studios across the UK. Our headquarters is located in Oxford, but there are other branches as well, for example, one is in Liverpool, the other one in Derby is currently being restructured. We are employing about 300 specialists, so now Rebellion is a much bigger company, than when I joined it several years ago to work on the original Aliens vs. Predator (1999) on PC. We have got a really great community full of very creative people of all kinds talented in making videogames.

- Has the last global economic crisis affected the game industry anyhow?

- It's been a hard time. Quite a lot of developers suffered financially, and some of them had to close down their studios. Fortunately, here Rebellion is in a strong financial position. We have been developing great projects and support wonderful relationships with our publishers. We continue to be very busy with our upcoming projects we are committed to. Everything is going fine here.

- What is your favorite story in the Aliens and Predator Universe?

- I have to say, that I am a huge fan of the James Cameron's Aliens (1986), but Ridley Scott's Alien (1979) is also still a big favorite of mine. It is really hard to choose the best one between them both and a original John McTiernan's Predator (1987) movie.

- What do you think about both Aliens vs. Predator movies (2004-2007)?

- Oh, yes, I've seen them both. I would say that original classic movies like Alien (1979), Aliens (1986) and Predator (1987) have contributed more to our new game and represent its primary influence. More recent Aliens vs. Predator films brought in a new generation of fans. There is still a huge number of people in the world continuing to love Aliens and Predators. The recent movies added some interesting new ideas to the franchise like some new weapons for the Predator and the Predalien creature. We have added the latter one to our game, but we have made this species look a bit cooler so you could have even more fun when confronting one of such monsters.

- In your opinion, what was the most successful title in the Aliens vs. Predator franchise?

- I would say that the most successful title is the one that we did. The first Aliens vs. Predator game appeared on Atari Jaguar in 1994 and it was a gauge title for Rebellion. People who got that console found much joy in playing the game. The project came around about the same time as Doom (1993). Our game offered similar to a modern concept where you could represent 3 different species: Alien, Predator or a human Colonial Marine. I was personally involved in making Aliens vs. Predator (1999) for PC and I am really proud of this game since that was the title I was working on after I had joined Rebellion. It had Multiplayer too, the dynamic lighting and the fear coming out from everywhere when you were playing as a Colonial Marine. It was a first move into the true 3D. An Alien could crawl the walls and look below for new victims. It was really exciting. I think the new Aliens vs. Predator (2010) game will be the best one in the whole line-up ever.

- Why the second part of the line-up, Aliens vs. Predator 2 (2001), was developed by another studio?

- That is a difficult question for me to answer! That is the way the things go sometimes. We were very busy at that time working on the Gold Edition (2000) of the original Aliens vs. Predator game (1999).

- Were you offered the chance to develop that sequel?

- We were in discussions about this. We were very pleased to see what Monolith Productions did with the sequel. They worked in a slightly different style providing a more cartoony look, though we prefer a pretty realistic and violent atmosphere that is returning back in our new 2010 version.

- We think it is great that your studio is making a new Aliens vs. Predator game! Could you tell how and when its concept was born?

- We've been working on this project for about 2-3 years. It was really exciting for us to get back to the Aliens vs. Predator concept and to start making a new game in the franchise. In the beginning we remembered the first game and were thinking about what changes we could add, if we got a chance to develop the new episode in the old school style.

- We don't see the number “3” in the official number of the title. Why did it happen?

- Well, is has been a long time since the original game was released. A new generation of fans have grown up. I guess, you can consider this as a Reboot, which is a popular word in modern culture. On the other hand, we want to let people know that it is still the Aliens vs. Predator game built in the familiar Universe.

- What were your main sources of inspiration during the creative process?

- Everything, including books and movies. The Universe is so rich. There are cool movies, excellent books, great games. All of that have contributed to our project in one way or another. We've taken a little bit out of everywhere. One of the most difficult, but exciting was a moment that took place at the early stage, when we were deciding, what we were going to do, what the story was going to be, when it could be set and how it could be interacted with. It has been really nice. We made sure we picked up a correct time period. Colonial Marines are in the galaxy. So we have been dealing with the things we love so much about the Aliens vs. Predator franchise expanding it a little bit more, showing people something new.

- How do you interact with your publisher?

- Sega is our great partner and it is truly wonderful to work with them. They really care about the Aliens vs. Predator Universe and they've been supporting everything we are doing. Yeah, they have been really helpful providing us with very useful feedback, being with us to organize various things like beta-tests to make sure that we make everything right so everyone could enjoy our game without getting stuck anywhere. One of the key things we want to achieve is to reach a new audience, so not only the hardcore gamers could play our title, but also to let the casual ones to have fun in the game. Sega has been with us to ensure that everyone could have a great time playing our game.

- Have you researched on the fans' feedback after Aliens vs. Predator 2 was released? What features were requested by the community?

- Oh, absolutely! I have been keeping an eye on the Forums and carefully read all the E-mails we get from the fans of the franchise. A lot of things they asked us for were already in our concept plans being the exact features we wanted to add. I've grown up with Aliens vs. Predator concept, I was making the original game and to me it was a personal obsession just as for a lot of other team members. You know, I think we feel the future of the line-up in the same way as the fans do. I am sure, they will be very happy with everything that we have done for the new game.

- What was the craziest game idea a fan of the franchise has ever asked you for?

- That is a tricky one to answer! I don't know, where to start. You got me stuck on this one! Actually, there were so many ideas that were nearly impossible to implement, and it was easy to understand this even without being a game developer. After the Aliens vs. Predator movies (2004-2007) people were writing to us saying how a Predator should war against an Alien and vice versa. The rest of such proposals do sound absurd now, especially to the modern and great Multiplayer we have prepared for you.

- How were the main characters’ designs created in Aliens vs. Predator (2010)?

- We tried a lot of different designs, made many concept art samples. For example, a Predator's mask was selected from different varieties. We have had a lot of discussions with our partners at 20th Century Fox, since they oversee the new products in the Aliens vs. Predator Universe and we had to be sure they were being happy with what we had showed them. We wanted the Colonial Marines look to be consistent with the designs from the James Cameron's Aliens movie and we have updated their characters' looks a little bit. We were arguing with the people who were and weren't the fans of this film about various aspects, including exactly how large the Marines' boots should be and so on. We are happy with where we have settled in. We have made great characters' designs that look pretty cool!

- What are the goals and motives of the main storyline characters?

- For the Marine, you are a Rookie. It is your first mission, and you are heading down to the planet to try to rescue some survivors from a chaos, that you know is going there after the break out of Aliens. As you can imagine, nothing goes according to a plan. For the Predator you will be heading to answer a distress call sent to you, because your secret site was disturbed by humans and you better find out what happened to some of the other Predators that want to check the things out before you and to wipe out, hunt down any of the humans and Aliens that might be lurking around the site. You have to take it from there. As an Alien, you are born in the laboratory. To see what can be extracted from the sacred ruins of the Predators, you escape, and it is pretty much instrumental in creating the hive and all the chaos that goes around the colony. The story is more instinctive, animalistic and primal. It is really fun to play.

- What ways do you prefer for storytelling?

- We have got one sequence of the events, one narrative story, if you like to call it this way. The Marine campaign is probably the longest one in the game. It is the most detailed with its unique narrative and great human characters, obviously. The Predator sees a very different perspective of these events with some side-events as well. You will see new stuff. For example, as a Marine you will not see, what an Alien can see. All campaigns play through completely different, since there are unique events going on and each factions gets its own assignments. You will see the same storyline, but in different timing and from various angles. When you are a Marine, you are going to travel through the forest maps, where you will be scared and will always have to look at the trees. When you are playing as a Predator you are leaping around the tops of the trees, hunting down your enemies below, so there is always a lot of variety in the gameplay.

- What means for the narrative have you chosen: videos, mission briefings, etc.?

- We are using a combination of all of them. We have got various cinematic clips in the game to understand as much things as are going around you as visually possible. For the Marine particularly, we've put in a lot of dialogue, radio chats and so on. You can hear the people you are talking getting into some kind of the back stories that give you a lot of information connecting itself altogether and letting the players to know more if they want by listening carefully to these conversations.

- What do you like more: CGI-cutscenes or clips based on the game’s engine?

- We live in the times, when the high technologies have been developing rapidly advancing the visual quality of the new products. Nearly everything we've been doing in the game is based on our own game's engine, because it gives players a consistent look and feelings as if you are going through a living game world.

- Was it difficult to achieve a proper balance of powers in your new Aliens vs. Predator game?

- It was certainly a challenging task, because the factions are so different. We tried to make the most out of all that was possible with our characters. The Alien has its speed, the ability to be concealed in the environment and hide in the darkness, leap from point to point and use some really powerful attacks. The Predator is able to get around quietly, fight against the Aliens and the Marines well, apply his vision modes. He is quite powerful in the close combat, but his ranged weaponry is quite slow. The Marines are vulnerable in many ways. They use their motion tracker to look out for new threats around. Obviously, they have some really powerful guns. Pulse rifle is enough to take down a Predator if you hold it steady. All the factions have their own advantages and disadvantages.

- Can you name some equipment available to the three races?

- The Marines use their Pulse rifles and Grenade launchers, small guns, shotguns, a Motion tracker device. The Predators employ Wrist-blades, shoulder cannons, throwing disks, spears that all will be helpful. The Aliens attack with their claws, jaws, tails. As you can see the gameplay approach would have to be very different depending on who you currently control.

- How will the Predators charge their shoulder cannons?

- There will be various Power Nodes around the map. You can use the charge points that can be found in the environment. You can draw power to the weapon from some other equipment you carry or the humans you defeat later in the game. You will have to be careful with your Power management unless you find more resources to charge from.

- What other useful objects are located in the environment?

- There is a number of different things you can interact with. I wouldn't like to be spoiling too much of it, but I can say that each of the represented species has its own way of using the environment to their advantage. For example, a Laptop computer controls the Sentry guns placed in different spots. As a Marine you will be able to deal with it by targeting it, the Predator prefers smash it with his Wrist-blades, the Aliens can attack it with their jaws. So they all have unique approaches to handling different things.

- Will their be any puzzle-solving elements in the gameplay or optional objectives provided to the player?

- Yes, absolutely, meaning that you will have different ways to approach your goals using your strategic thinking. You can go with a full frontal assault or you can prefer to distract your enemies, sneak by their defense and kill them one by one quietly.

- Is there a Predalien in the game?

- Yes, the Predalien is featured in the game, which is a formidable foe. There are also other surprises in this area, but I won't disclose them at the moment.

- What's the Predalien relationships with other main factions?

- I think, it is fair to say, that for a Predalien the Predators are not his best friends.

- What can you say about the unique kill moves and the trophy collection system?

- Both the Aliens and the Predators have a number of quite vicious and personal finishing moves allowing to kill the enemies in unique ways. There is always a difficult choice between making them or not, since if you do, you'll be extremely vulnerable in the process. However, if you are skilled enough, we will track down your statistics and show it to you in the end of each mission to let you know, how well you were progressing, evaluate your actions with a rating. There is always some sense in getting back to the missions you completed to try to finish them better the next time, being more stealthy, make more kill moves and so on.

- What is required to perform a kill move?

- Ultimately, it is about catching your prey unaware, being successful in close combat on the ground, grabbing the victims in time, while they are distracted with something you did previously.

- What challenges does the AI provide?

- Our AI is really smart. Particularly, Aliens will use the darkness to their advantage, hide in various places to ambush you or hunt you down in a pack surrounding you from all sides. If you are playing as a Marine or as a Predator, at times you will see an Alien just crawling very slowly towards you. You have to be nervous, since it means that probably there are other aliens hiding around and silently approaching to attack you from the different angles simultaneously.

- How can you describe the in-game interface?

- We've been putting a lot of efforts into making it convenient and accessible to any player. The on-screen indicators will give you the valuable feedback on everything that is going on around you. PC-version will surely support console controllers as well.

- Tell us about your game's graphics engine.

- We are using our internal technology for this, and it is called the "Asura" engine. It is very much focused on multi-threaded rendering. We can really make the maximum use of dynamic lightning and shadows, which is one of the key elements in the visuals of the Aliens vs. Predator Universe and the whole atmosphere of the game. So you can expect to see a lot of great breathtaking scenes.

- What kinds of locations will we be able to visit?

- There is a huge variety of them presented in the game from claustrophobic tunnels to derelict colonies, jungles, swamps, laboratories, open areas and so on.

- What do you think about violence in videogames and in your new game?

- The game is based on the movies that originally were very violent. Yes, Aliens vs. Predator (2010) is a violent game intended for adults. We are not making this game for kids. It would be wrong for us to turn down the scariest things in the Universe. Adults have different attitude than kids do. If it is called a game, it still doesn't mean that is always suitable for children. In the Fifties the Rock'n'Roll was depicted as the end of society. Then there were 'video-nasties' in the Eighties, now it is time to blame videogames. There are always things the society opposes on, but I think there are other important courses requiring its attention.

- How has the Multiplayer mode been coming along?

- Multiplayer in Aliens vs. Predator (2010) supports up to 18 players online in one party. We've got a number of modes for that, including traditional Deathmatch, Predator Hunt, Alien Infestation, Domination, and Survivor, which is a co-op play for 4 Marines trying to survive against the AI-controlled Aliens as long as possible.

- Will the Multiplayer over LAN feature be supported?

- I can't reveal any details about it yet.

- What faction in the game do you like the most?

- When I compete online, most likely, you will find me playing as an Alien, hiding in dark places and always being ready to ambush you!

- How is everything going in your sound department?

- We have created a fully orchestrated dynamic music system which was recorded with a big orchestra. It was designed the way we could use different tracks, and make them change dynamically depending on what is happening in the game to provide a player with a cinematic and deep, immersive, powerful experience.

- Concluding the main topic, what innovations are you bringing in with the new Aliens vs. Predator game, if we compare it to the original one?

- First of all, we are making it as more accessible as possible hoping to please casual players and hardcore fans as well. Secondly, the new Aliens vs. Predator (2010) is much more agile making you leap around different places, crawling over walls and surfaces as an Alien, fighting in close combat, and performing special kill moves. There is so much more I could add, but I don't want to spoil your excitement before you see the game in action!

- In your point of view, what was the best PC or console game in 2009?

- It is not easy to choose here. I think Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is very good on PS3. I had a huge amount of fun with Trials HD on Xbox 360. I'm not really sure about PC, because I spend a lot more time playing on consoles nowadays.

- What's your favorite game of all time?

- It is the original Star Wars Arcade (1983) machine with old vector graphics. When I was a kid, I used to spend a lot of money on it playing this game over and over again, blowing the Death Star, and being really excited about it.

- What do you like to do in your free time?

- I like to draw, to play games, to write and to read books.

- Can you name the book that has impressed you the most?

- The first thing that comes to my mind here is "The Road" written by Cormac McCarthy. It is a great book! I'm a big fan of Post-apocalyptic fiction in general.

- Name some things you associate with Russia.

- That question is like a minefield! I'd name Vodka, good Food, and Snow!

- What would you wish to the gamers from all over the world?

- I would wish all of them to enjoy our new Aliens vs. Predator (2010) game!
